Powder Coating Process

Powder coating is an advanced technique of painting different materials, mostly metals using dry powder. It is used to provide an attractive, long-lasting and scratch-resistant finish on various items like household appliances, commercial products, industrial equipments etc. This new powder coating system does not require any solvent as compared to the normal liquid painting method; that uses pollutants known as volatile organic compounds (VOC). The high quality powder finish is achieved by implementing a simple powder coating procedure; using a variety of powder coating machines.

Powder coating is a rapidly developing finishing technology that is pollution-free, environment-friendly and cost-effective. It can withstand impact, abrasion, heat, stains and extreme weather conditions; to produce smooth surfaces in unlimited colors. Thermosetting and thermoplastic are the basic categories of powder coating. The dry powder is prepared using polymer based granules that are mixed with few ingredients including hardeners and pigments; which are heated, cooled and then powdered.

Pre-treatment, powder application and curing are the main steps of a typical powder coating process. Part preparation or pre-treatment process is one of the most essential and initial step of powder coating. It involves thorough cleaning of the surface of related material by removing dust, oil, rust, scale etc. The chemical process comprises of degreasing, de-rusting, phosphating and water rinsing to prepare a base for final coating. Various powder coating applications need suitable methods of preparation like abrasive blasting, shot blasting etc.

The powder is applied through electrostatic powder coating gun, thereby bonding it on the product’s surface. The over-sprayed powder is fully recoverable and can be easily cleaned; thus reducing labor costs. Also a single, thick coat is sufficient for almost all applications. This safe and re-usable powder coating virtually eliminates wastage of raw material as compared to the liquid finishing method.   

The next stage of powder coating is actual application of the powder using appropriate powder coating equipment.
